Week 7: Thing 17

How great is it that not only do we work for a cutting edge county library system, but that also our state is supportive of eLearning!

Week 7: Thing 16

Wikis

Okay, so the term reminds me a bit of Ewoks and Wookies...but hey, I am of the Star Wars generation.

Here at CCPL we have been using wikis to share information among groups and teams for a couple of years now.

Wikipedia is the ultimate in wiki-ness. It is a user-centered, user-developed, and user-controlled resource. When something is amiss in wikiworld, the users are able to send up a flag. It is self-regulating. A very interesting concept...

Week 6: Thing 15

http://www.librarycrunch.com/

The above Blog by Michael Casey actually coined the term "Library 2.0." The tag had already been applied to Business and Web.

John Reimer provides that libraries can expand, expose, and extend metadata using Web 2.0 technologies and philosophies. Essentially, metadata is a term for data which describes data. Because of its descriptive role, metadata helps to bridge the semantic gap. In a post-modern context which describes artworks and novels, etc. as being authored as metatexts or metanarratives removed from any sense of authorship, we can view metadata as a subjective experience as well. Ultimately, it is the user that determines the meaning. Quite simply the previous statement may be used to describe post-modernity in general. We are all users.

Tags

It is a bit like the old game we used to play when we were kids, "Tag! You're IT!"

Labeling and categorizing into our own terms is how we describe the "IT" nowadays though.

Okay, I admit that I have played a little with del.icio.us before today. It is still fun though!

Week 5: Thing 12

Well, I am not sure how inclusive my sources are here for this search roll, but I tried. I did combine some of my favorite sites with some others that I know of to paint a pretty complete picture of indie rock news.

LibraryThing

As you may have noticed, I have added a link to my library at LibraryThing. Cataloging is far from extinct!

Week 5: Thing 10

I chose to use Meez as my avatar creator, and am pretty happy with the result...if only I was that skinny in real life, ah!

Week 4: Things 8 & 9

Well, I have successfully edited my blog to show my RSS subscriptions. I also was able to duplicate the header from the template for its title.

Here is the link:

http://www.bloglines.com/blog/exindiegirl

This was a bit frustrating as I couldn't really figure out the point of the Bloglines Blog. It just kind of stays there. I thought there would be a really easy and obvious way for the blog at Blogspot to consume the features offered by Bloglines. This may hit me tomorrow, but for today I am stumped.

Week 3: Technology Thing

http://www.songbirdnest.com/

Songbird, a desktop/web mashup application that lets you play and organize media from the web in an easy way. Go to a website, and Songbird's software will fetch all the media files contained in the page and display them for you as a playlist. Or drag any media from any web page into your library and have it at your fingertips for repeated listening (and viewing -- it handles video just as smoothly).

Songbird also does the basics you'd expect from any media library application (letting you manipulate and play all the media on your computer), is available across all platforms (just like Firefox, on which it's based), and handles every conceivable kind of file (mp3, AAC, WAV, you name it), so it could very well become your go-to dashboard for web media. Plus, it has an adorable design, with its little birdies.

Week 3: Things 5-7

Okay, so I love my pets...

Flikr is very easy to use!

Okay, I just did my first mash up. It is titled "The Eyes Have It." See what you think...(pun totally intended)

Week 2: Things 3 & 4

Well, I have set up my own blog. Actually I cheated a bit. I had this blog already, but modified it a bit for this learning experiment thing. I also added a new picture of myself.

Week 1: Thing 2

On Lifelong Learning

I feel that since the process of lifelong learning is so much ingrained in our library system's philosophy that these things (habits) are really old hat for us. It never hurts, though, to be reminded of the habits.

I easily take responsibility for my learning needs; however, I struggle most with teaching/mentoring others. My struggle is probably a combination of opportunity and hesitation. I enjoy sharing new things with others, but often hesitate to participate in actual teaching/mentoring activities.

Week 1: Thing 1

I think this is great that our system has embraced new technologies as well as learning initiatives in such a way.

Preface

Welcome to my blog! Vanity publishing is alive and well...

this blog will serve as home to some of my thoughts during our journey through 23 Things.

23 Things is a learning project used to help groups experience and gain exposure to Web 2.0 technologies. It most importantly is a method for sharing information.
